Collaboration in Nursing (A)

“We Are The World” was a collaborative single released in 1985 in order to raise aid money for a famine in Africa. As you can see in the video, the song features a variety of singer-celebrities from a variety of different music genres who were popular at the time. I think this is a good example of collaboration because these people probably don’t have skills that would be traditionally considered useful in combating a famine, but rather they used what skills they did have to make a difference. “We Are The World” raised $63 million ($149 million when adjusted for inflation in todays money). I think it goes to show that just because you think there’s a certain way to help people doesn’t mean it has to be the only way; and we should doing the best we can with the skills we are strong with- leading with our best foot forward.

It’s also a beautiful song.

  • Creative and wonderful way to think of collaboration! I agree, it is a wonderful song and it was fun to hear and watch the performance again. Thanks for sharing!

  • Dennis, I really enjoyed how you chose a song to describe collaboration. I remember hearing about this song, but I had forgotten about it. It was truly amazing seeing all of these people come together for a cause, even though they did not need to. They chose to do this because they realized there were people who needed more help and they could be of service. That’s how I like to view nursing. A group of people who come together for the betterment of a patient’s needs. Great job!

    • Hi Francesca,

I also thought that there was a nice story surrounding the making of this song. Your point about people joining a cause even though they don’t need to reminded me of healthcare providers. None of us were forced to into this profession but we do it because we feel like we can be of service – just like the celebrities in this video. Especially during the beginning of the pandemic nurses were getting the celebrity treatment, which was an interesting comparison.

Thanks for commenting on my post.
